Myths About Hair Loss

If you are experiencing hair loss, there is an extensive list of possible causes. There are some myths associated with hair loss as well as ineffective solutions. We will disprove some of these myths and explain the facts associated with each.

Myths

Baldness is more prevalent on the mother’s side. Many believe that baldness is more strongly associated with the mother’s side of the family. This is untrue. It is equally associated with the father’s side of the family or even both.

Genetic hair loss is found in men only. Many hold the belief that balding occurs almost entirely with males. In fact, many females experience hair loss or thinning. Yes, men usually experience more significant hair loss than women, but over 40 percent of women suffer from hair loss.

High levels of testosterone cause more hair loss. Some parts of the scalp are more sensitive to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that can trigger more hair loss. The level of testosterone in your body does not directly relate to hair loss.

Decreased blood flow to the scalp causes hair loss. Healthy and naturally growing hair does require a significant amount of blood flow to the scalp. When hair loss occurs, this decreases the amount of blood flow in the scalp required. Decreased blood flow is the effect of hair loss, not the cause.

Hats cause hair loss. Some believe that wearing a hat cuts off the flow of oxygen to the hair, which results in hair loss. As previously stated, the scalp requires blood flow. This is how hair follicles receive oxygen. However, creating tension and pulling on the hair can be unhealthy.

Constant shampooing causes hair loss. Many believe this is because people witness the most hair loss while shampooing in the shower. As a result, people hold off on shampooing for a few days. The next time they wash their hair, even more hair falls out. This recurrence may lead some to believe that shampoo is the root cause.

Dyeing or perming the hair causes hair loss. Hair coloring and chemicals are not usually associated with hair loss. If used excessively, it may be a problem.
