From 30 Australian Mo Bros in 2003 to over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas worldwide, the Movember Foundation has helped change the face of men’s health. The Movember Foundation has funded over 1,000 programs dedicated to tackling some of the biggest health issues faced by men – prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide, with more than 1.1 million cases recorded in 2012. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and in 2015, an estimated 220,800 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer occurs when some of the cells in the prostate reproduce far more rapidly than normal, resulting in a tumor. Age, family history, and ethnicity play a big factor in developing this disease and unfortunately, most prostate cancers develop without men experiencing any symptoms in the early stages. If you’re concerned about your risks, you can take two common tests for initial detection, the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) and the PSA blood test (PSA), depending on the results of those tests you may be referred to a specialist for a biopsy.
Testicular Cancer
The rate of men diagnosed with testicular cancer has doubled in the last 50 years. About 8,430 new cases of testicular cancer are diagnosed in men each year and this cancer is most common in young men aged 15 - 34 years. Testicular cancer starts as an abnormal growth or tumor that develops in one or both testicles. Secondary testicular tumors are caused by cancerous cells that have spread to the testicles from other parts of the body. These cancers are much rarer than the previous forms of testicular cancer. The exact cause of testicular cancer is unknown, however it’s believed that factors such as family history and down syndrome are thought to increase the risk of testicular cancer. Just like prostate cancer, many men may experience few or no symptoms of testicular cancer so it’s important to do regular self-examinations. If you have any concerns, it’s important that you contact your doctor since this cancer can be effectively treated, and potentially cured, if diagnosed and treated early.
Mental Health
On average 87 men each day take their life by suicide in the USA and the highest rate of depression is in men aged 40 – 59. While the highest rate of depression is typically in older men anyone, of an age, can be affected by poor mental health. Many men find it very difficult to talk about their problems because many men follow the stereotype that men are strong and silent and don’t express their emotions or ask for help about what they’re feeling. It’s important to be proactive about your mental health, be aware of risk factors and symptoms, such as family history of mental health problems, drug and alcohol use, or stressful life events. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health problem, it’s important to seek help from a friend, family member, doctor, or even someone on a support line, just remember someone is always available to listen.
Physical Inactivity
Physical inactivity is one of the biggest health issues faced by men. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality and approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are due to insufficient physical activity. Physical inactivity may seem like a small issues compared to prostate and testicular cancer or even mental health issues but being physically inactive is a big deal. Especially because people who live active lifestyles help reduce their risk of developing these cancers and improve their physical and mental health. By just getting 30 minutes of exercise every day you can improve your mood and significantly reduce the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle.
