Each individual hair goes through a typical life cycle. Hair grows, falls, and regrows. The hair grows from the follicle, or root, underneath the skin. Each hair receives its nourishment from blood vessels at the base of the follicle. The four phases that make up the life cycle are the Anagen, Catagen, Telogen, and Exogen.
Anagen (Growing Phase)
This is the growing phase of the hair. It lasts about two to seven years, determining the length of the hair. A continuous division of cells in the follicle produces this growth by pushing new cells towards the surface.
Catagen (Transition Phase)
The growth of the hair is slowed and eventually stops. This short transitional period lasts about 10 days. The hair begins to retract from the follicle and migrate upward. The stop in growth signifies the death of the hair.
Telogen (Resting Phase)
The follicle remains inactive for a period of
about three months. Having risen enough towards the surface, the hair is ready
to fall out.
Exogen Phase (New Hair Phase)
The
dormant hair sheds, while a new hair begins growth at the follicle. The cycle
can then return to the Catagen phase.
On
a person’s head there are an average of 100 to 150 thousand hair follicles. It
is normal for 50 to 100 hairs to fall out daily. Hair loss and thinning occurs
