1. Diet
The way you eat directly affects the way you feel. In this case, what you eat directly affects the way you look. To keep your hair looking its healthiest, WebMD suggests adding foods that contain omega 3s, vitamins B6 and B12, and protein to your everyday diet. A few foods that are beneficial to sustaining your hair growth are salmon, almonds, bananas, chicken, eggs, and whole grains.
2. Scalp stimulation
Everyone loves a good massage, and your scalp is no exception to that fact. Scalp massages stimulate the scalp by increasing the blood circulation throughout. In a 2016 NIH study, researchers found that regular scalp massages over a 24-week period yielded a “significant increase in hair thickness”. The increased blood flow to the scalp promotes consistent hair growth.
3. Catch some Zzzzz’s
Sleep is one of the few necessities that your body depends on. If you are not getting enough sleep, your body begins to feel weak. Adequate sleep can play a significant role in combating hair loss. If you are stressed, you tend to stay awake longer. By staying awake longer, you are not giving your body the adequate time it needs to recharge and replenish. While we sleep, our body is relaxing itself and ensuring everything is well balanced. Keeping your body healthy and well rested will result in healthier, stronger hair.
4. Aloe Vera
While aloe vera is predominately used to combat burns and rashes, aloe has profound effects on the scalp. It’s success on the scalp can be contributed to containing choline. Choline is a moisturizing nutrient that fights against dandruff and minimizes dryness.
5. Onions
Similar to aloe vera, onions have been used in several diverse ways as a healing agent. Onions are known to have a cleansing presence about them. The juice of an onion is the real moneymaker. The juice acts as an antibacterial that moisturizes and strengthens the hair. A few ways to use onions to combat hair loss can be found here.
6. Reduce Stress
Stress is an additional factor of hair loss that is similar to the sleep section mentioned above. Constant stress causes your body to wear down. Eventually, this will cause your hair to wear down. Telogen effluvium is medically coined as stress-induced hair loss. Reducing the amount of stress in your life will directly benefit how healthy your hair is. Small steps can be made to progress in reducing stress.
7. Look for Biotin and Keratin
How natural is your shampoo and conditioner? When buying shampoo and conditioner it is best to buy as clean as possible. The best products are the ones with biotin, keratin, and that show low traces of sulfate (what makes it sudsy). Biotin and keratin are essential for making the hair stronger and thicker. The best products on the market for natural looking hair can be found here.
8. Turn down the heat
The heat burns. Whether it be from a hair dryer or the shower water, extreme amounts of heat can wreak havoc on that head of hair. Heat plays a role in hair loss, but cannot be listed as the sole factor. Elevated temperatures lead to hair loss by drying out the scalp. If the scalp is dry, there is no environment for growth to occur. Try to take cooler showers or decrease the usage of your blow dryer for a few weeks and track any changes in your hair.
