Is Seasonal Hair Loss Fact or Fiction?

I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of facts about hair loss. With so much information out there it’s hard to tell what’s true and what’s not. For instance, some claim to be pulling a few more strands of hair out of their brush whenever summer roles around. Is this a common occurrence or just a special case? We’re here today to bust the myth about seasonal hair loss. Fact is: it’s not really a myth!

Humans tend to shed between 50 and 100 hairs every day. Men and women report more hair loss while washing or brushing during the late fall and winter months. While researches haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact cause of the increase in hair loss seasonally, many attribute it to environmental factors. Some researchers suggest that the environmental stress brought on by heat and more sun exposure during the summer months causes more hair to fall out, much like animals shedding. “The thought here is that perhaps in the summer months, we hang on to more hair to provide increased protection from the sun. A few months after, when we begin shifting into late fall and early winter, those hairs that we held onto during summer will make a transition into the shed phase,” says Emily Wise Shanahan, a Massachusetts–based dermatologist.

Hair goes through different phases of growth. The telogen phase or “resting” phase is when hair loss is typically seen. A typical strand of hair has a life cycle of between 24 and 72 months (2 and 6 years) during which time it will grow normally. However, around ten percent of a person’s hair may be in the telogen phase at which point the hair can fall out. Studies have shown that women experience slightly higher rates of telogen during the month of July and sees that hairs falling out 100 days later, around mid October or November. There is no need to worry though, because with normal hair loss comes regrowth which means hair loss is not noticeable. However, if you notice slow regrowth or significant thinning near the crown or temples of your head this could be an indication of male or female pattern baldness.
