At PAI Medical Group of Indiana, one of the most common questions we get is: “How much do you charge per graft?” The answer? We don’t.
The reason we don’t charge per graft at PAI is that it simply isn’t accurate. A hair graft could have anywhere from one hair to up to 9 hairs. It wouldn’t be right to charge the same for a thousand single hair grafts as a thousand 5 hair grafts. The more accurate way is to understand how much coverage you need. There are numerous aspects that go into figuring this out.
First, we evaluate the donor area, looking for the number of hairs per follicle, number of follicles per square centimeter, and we evaluate the tissue in the area. This allows us to understand how many and what type of grafts we can take from that area. It takes a certain number of hairs to cover a certain square centimeter, so after we evaluate the tissue, we then know how much coverage we can achieve. Different areas also require different types of grafts, so it’s not until you’ve had the evaluation that it can truly be understood what is needed and what can be done.
