Can Women Experience Pattern Baldness?

Yes, women can experience pattern baldness. It does not occur in women as much as it does in men, but it can occur.

Baldness develops when one’s hair falls out and new hair fails to grow in its place. It is not usually that abrupt. Generally the hair follicle begins to shrink over time resulting in shorter and finer hair. The end result is no further hair production from the follicle. Female pattern baldness is mostly associated with genetic predisposition, but it can also occur due to aging and varying levels of hormones (mostly androgens, male hormones).

The hair thinning associated with female pattern baldness is actually slightly different than that of males. In females, the hair thins on the top of the scalp and widens through the center part of the hair. The front hairline remains unaffected in most cases and rarely does the hair loss result in near or total baldness. On the other hand, in male pattern baldness the front hairline diminishes and total baldness can eventually occur.

The hair loss associated with pattern baldness in both men and women is permanent, but there are options for improving this condition, such as low level laser hair therapy at PAI Medical. Testosterone and Hair Loss - Is There a Connection?

Could there be a connection between testosterone and hair loss? Is the reason a black and white answer? How complex is it?

While it is believed that Androgenic Alopecia has been the sole culprit in hair loss, research suggests that a particular hormone could be responsible for hair loss within the male population.

This hormone called Dihydrotesttosterone, or DHT, is a by-product of testosterone. It is made by an enzyme called 5a reductase or DHEAS, which is more common in women. DHT is found in the prostate, skin and hair follicles.

What could first trigger hair loss may not be the amount of DHT or testosterone directly per say, but the sensitivity of your hair follicles along with the exposure of different amounts of DHT or testosterone. The AR gene is responsible for making the receptors on hair follicles, which interact with testosterone and DHT. This nature of sensitivity, determined by genetics, may be what controls the tolerance these receptors can acquire.

Your individual genetic code may also affect the limit or the maximum capacity your body can retain before finally feeling the effects of an overload, thus triggering the start of hair loss.

That being said, how else could this affect a person's life or lifestyle? If hair loss is due to the sensitivity of your AR gene, could working out in excess lead to hair loss? Athletes and bodybuilders live a certain lifestyle in which taking an enormous amount supplements is involved, some of which can lead to a rise in testosterone levels. This increase in testosterone could test the limits and may lead to an increase in DHT, which in excess may trigger the start of hair loss.
