Darren Andrews, the Clinic Director of PAI Medical Group of Indiana got to give Indy Style's Tracy Forner a tour of the PAI Indy facility this month! Why do we Have Different Types of Hair

Have you ever wondered why the hair on your head is much thicker than that of the rest of your body? We can trace our disproportionate hair back to the earliest existence of mankind. Evidence has shown that early adaptations of our stance play a significant role in why our hair on our head and body are different.

The earliest adaption was going from being quadrupedal to bipedal. Walking upright means that the main attraction for UV rays on our body is our head. The hairs on our head tend to be longer and thicker to protect us. Another key component to why we have less hair compared to some other species is because we can manufacture our own heat. As humans, we wear several layers of clothes when we get cold, an advantage that no other species is fortunate enough to have.

The science behind our disproportionate hair is explained in three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The focal point of these phases is the anagen phase. Anagen is known as the initial growth phase of the hair follicle. The difference between the hairs on our head compared to the rest of our bodies can be explained by looking closer at the anagen phase, this phase can last as long as several years or as short as a few months. For example, the hairs on your arms typically stay in the anagen phase for a few months, while hairs on our head can stay in the anagen phase for several years. The growth phases are completely different for the two areas of our bodies.

No matter the length, all hair on our body play a significant role. Our head hair is the first line of defense against brutal UV rays. Our eyebrows shield the eyes from dripping sweat or unknown irritants that may slide down the face. Our eyelashes act as the steel trap of each eyeball, shutting the eyes the second anything gets close. The hair on our forearms and legs acts as an insulator when it gets cold.
