One researcher, Emi Nishimura from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, noted that the research showed that “hair follicle stem cells change their fate to be eliminated from the skin in response to DNA damage. The resultant depletion of stem cell pools miniaturization of these aged hair follicles.” This means that over time the stem cells wither away due to damage from sun exposure, chemical exposure etc.
