The Evolution of Hair TransplantTechnology

Hair Transplantation has come a long way since it began in the early 1950s. Thanks to numerous technological advances, what was once fueled by superstition and old wives tales has slowly been replaced with scientific progression. The “corn row” or “doll’s hair” look that was previously associated with hair transplantation has evolved into modern-day follicular unit procedures with robotic assistance and non-surgical alternatives including Laser Hair Therapy and even more recently PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy.

In the early 50s, Dr. Norman Orentreich began to experiment with the idea of relocating hair on the back and sides of the head to areas of thinning hair or balding. Dr. Orentreich’s experiments showed that healthy hair that is harvested from the back and sides of the scalp that is transplanted to balding areas of the top of the head will continue to grow as if it were still in its original location. This “Donor Dominance” principle laid the foundation for modern hair transplantation.

During the 60s and 70s, hair transplants grew in popularity. Surgical techniques began to change with the use of large grafts known as “plugs” that were removed by round punches. 

Mini-grafting, the use of small grafts cut from a strip of donor tissue was introduced in 1984. Combinations of mini and micro-grafts created fullness and density and softened the frontal hairline. Procedures that used larger grafts in the center of the patient’s scalp with smaller grafts around them to make their results look more natural were called Mini-Micro Grafting. 

The introduction of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) by Drs. Bernstein and Rassman in 1995 increased the skills required by the surgeon and staff performing the hair transplant.  During Follicular Unit Transplantation, stereo-microscopic graft dissection is used to transplant a patient’s hair in its naturally occurring groups. By the year 2000, FUT was considered the “gold standard” of surgical hair restoration.

Today, some of the leading hair restoration surgeons perform an ultra-refined follicular unit hair transplant procedure, using extremely tiny incisions that allow them to “tightly pack” tiny grafts when it’s necessary. This ultra-refined follicular unit procedure allows patients to achieve their desired density in a given area of their scalp in only one surgical session.
